The Invisible Web: Where Search Engines Fear to Go
London
19 June 2001

The invisible web is not only much bigger than the visible or open web, but it is also growing exponentially and therefore the need to know about invisible web resources is becoming increasingly important. According to BrightPlanet's white paper on "The deep web" (July 2000) total quality content of the deep (or invisible) web is at least 1,000 to 2,000 times greater than that of the visible web. If you are not making use of invisible web resources you are missing out on some of the best material available on the web.

The invisible web gives information professionals a great opportunity to demonstrate that they can add value to an organisation by developing an expert knowledge of the invisible web and are therefore able to call upon a much wider range of web resources than most typical internet searchers.

The Canadian Association for Information Science is pleased to announce its 29th annual conference, "Beyond the Web: Technologies, Knowledge and People," to be held with the Congress for the Social Sciences and Humanities of Canada at the Universit Laval, Qubec, May 27-29, 2001.

In our field theory meets practice; people interact with technology; conventional libraries are integrated into information architectures; computing power confronts articulated policy; data becomes knowledge. All of our work, however specialized, takes place in a broader context of diverse and challenging scholarship: library science, mathematics, computer science, management science, sociology, education, psychology, philosophy, economics, political science and cultural studies. The conference, therefore, has three distinct but related themes:

Technologies
How new theories and applications of information technology are shaping and reshaping our information preferences and expectations, within traditional libraries, archives, and other burgeoning information systems and services.

Knowledge
How discourse communities, fields of knowledge and information ecologies are defining and redefining themselves in changing technological, social and political contexts.

People
How individuals, and their many diverse communities, interact with their information environments, both technological and intellectual, at a cognitive, cultural or intellectual level.

JCDL 2001: Joint Conference on Digital Libraries
Roanoke, Virginia
24-28 June 2001

Jointly sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR), Special Interest Group on Hypertext, Hypermedia, and the Web (ACM SIGWEB), and Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society (IEEE Computer Society) Technical Committee on Digital Libraries (TCDL). The Joint Conference on Digital Libraries is a major international forum focusing on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL 2001 enhances the tradition of conference excellence already established by the ACM and IEEE-CS by combining the events that these professional societies have sponsored on an annual basis, the ACM Digital Libraries Conferences and the IEEE-CS Advances in Digital Libraries Conferences. Following JDCL will be an NSF PI meeting for the US Digital Libraries Initiative. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term "digital libraries", including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, and distributing digital content; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries are distinguished from information retrieval systems because they include more types of media, provide additional functionality and services, and include other stages of the information life cycle, from creation through use. Digital libraries can be viewed as a new form of information institution or as an extension of the services libraries currently provide.

The intended community for this conference includes those interested in aspects of digital libraries such as infrastructure; institutions; metadata; content; services; digital preservation; system design; implementation; interface design; human-computer interaction; evaluation of performance; evaluation of usability; collection development; intellectual property; privacy; electronic publishing; document genres; multimedia; social, institutional, and policy issues; user communities; and associated theoretical topics.

Participation is sought from all parts of the world and from the full range of disciplines and professions involved in digital library research and practice, including computer science, information science, librarianship, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, technology, medicine, social sciences, and humanities. All domains - academe, government, industry, and others - are encouraged to participate as presenters or attendees.

Researching Widening Access: International Perspectives Conference
Glasgow
29 June - 1 July 2001

This conference has developed out of research, currently underway within the Centre, on evaluating initiatives designed to widen access to further and higher education. This research has a strong international dimension. The conference is designed to review the issues which have emerged out of research into widening access to education. This has been an important theme of educational policy in many countries over a number of years, and is receiving even more attention with the growing emphasis on lifelong learning and social inclusion. We are inviting a number of leading figures from the international research community to provide an analysis of the issues which have emerged from research, or which the research community should be addressing. It is planned that these keynote presentations will be complemented by papers from a wide range of researchers. It is hoped that the outcomes from the conference will provide critical and analytical perspectives which will inform policy and practice in this field. In addition to the conference proceedings, key papers will be published as a conference report. URL http://led.gcal.ac.uk/crll/conf.htm

The Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute (HATII) Fourth International Digitisation Summer School for Cultural Heritage Professionals
Glasgow
8-13 July 2001

The availability of high-quality digital content is central to improved public access, teaching, and research about heritage information. Archivists, librarians, and museum professionals are among the many groups that are increasingly involved in creating digital resources to improve access and understanding to their collections. Skills in understanding the principles and best practice in the digitisation of primary textual and image resources have broad value. Participants in the course will examine the advantages of developing digital collections of heritage materials, as well as investigate issues involved in creating, curating, and managing access to such collections. The lectures will be supplemented by seminars and practical exercises. In these, participants will apply the practical skills they acquire to the digitisation of an analogue collection which they have selected (print, image e.g. photographic or slide, music manuscripts, or map). The focus will be on working with primary source material not otherwise available in digital form.

Participants are encouraged to bring material related to their own interests or to those of their home institution. Where this is not practical, material from the University of Glasgow's collections will be made available. URL: http://www.hatii.arts.gla.ac.uk/DigiSS01/

11-13 July 2001

Stream convenors: Michael Chumer, Rutgers University ([email protected] ); ThomasArmbruester, University of Mannheim ([email protected] ); Ron Day, Wayne State University ([email protected] ).

While the theme of management knowledge and knowledge management has produced a growing body of conceptual and empirical work, the life cycles of management knowledge and the appeal of knowledge management to managers are still under-explored issues. In this regard questions need to be addressed about the way management knowledge emerges, how it is transmitted, and under which circumstances it is consumed. This, in turn, raises questions about the aspect of packaging and commodification, about the appeal of knowledge management in general and certain approaches (techniques, concepts) in particular, and about the ontological status of managerial knowledge itself. Other aspects involve the international dimension of knowledge transmission, which is connected with cultural hegemony, diversity and resistance. The stream is open to issues of embeddedness: political, structural and cultural circumstances, within which management knowledge emerges and is transmitted, are to be addressed. We invite the submission of conceptual and empirical, also historical, papers of any paradigmatic provenance, which touch on the following themes:

  • The construction and emergence of management knowledge: creation and explication, or disembodiment and harvesting?
  • The political economy/political embeddedness of management knowledge: the involvement of different groups, and the relation of power and knowledge
  • Contents and approaches: cultural hegemony, variety or convergence of management techniques
  • Academic treatments of, and attitudes towards, management knowledge and knowledge management
  • The ontological status: management knowledge, or expertise, or just practice?
  • The media of management knowledge: the role of consultants, (investment) banks, publishers, multinational corporations, and academics
  • The structural embeddedness of management knowledge: network analysis, inter-actor ties and the institutional setting
  • The paths of knowledge dissemination: country-to-country transmission, hegemony, resistance
  • The appeal of knowledge management: acceptance and use of management tools and techniques
  • The role of commodification and the ontological status of management knowledge
  • Power/knowledge, the use of ideas, and the confirmation of the managerial status
  • The role of knowledge management in economic restructuring and in the global economy

Digital Cultural Heritage III: Finding Aids and Analysis Tools in Archives and Memory Institutions
Maastricht
11-14 July 2001

This year's seminar is concerned with integrating developments in finding aids (virtual reference rooms) with innovations in text and other analysis tools which will allow the most varied and rich access to cultural and historical information and knowledge. Following on from the experience gained in the last two cycles which focused on implications of digitalisation (1999) and interoperability of content (2000), this seminar will continue to explore how multimedia is transforming learning, knowledge organisation and knowledge management and will focus on archives. The cycle of attention given to all three kinds of memory institutions (museum, library, archive) is conceived to be a building and integrative process. The seminar provides an opportunity to gain exposure to the most recent developments in cultural heritage science and to interact with other professionals who share similar concerns. http://listserv.muohio.edu/archives/archives.html

Libraries Without Walls 4 - The Delivery of Library Services to Distant Users:
Distributed Resources - Distributed Learning
Lesvos
14 - 18 September 2001

The fourth Libraries Without Walls conference continues the tradition of the LWW Conferences by bringing together international perspectives on the delivery of library services to users distant from the physical library. When the first LWW Conference was held in 1995, the focus was primarily on distance learning and geographical dispersion. Since then, however, rapid advances in the development of ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) based infrastructures and services have led to a situation where many library users now routinely access services remotely - even when 'remotely' means 'within sight of the library building'. As a previous conference attendee observed, "we are all distance learners now".

LWW4 is concerned with innovative ways of delivering library services in this new environment. Papers may present the results of research or of innovative practice, for traditionally LWW is a meeting place for researchers and practitioners. Papers are invited which address the following themes, but papers on any aspect of 'Libraries without Walls' will be considered.

Themes: The role of libraries in supporting lifelong learning.
The role of libraries in supporting distance and open learning.
Libraries' role in the development of information skills by remote users.
Technical and managerial solutions to providing remote access to large collections of datasets, including the design of portals and gateways.
Design issues in the delivery of online services, including web interface design.
Specific solutions to problems created by technology e.g.authentication, security.
Collaborative approaches, especially between librarians and others (e.g. teachers).
Strategic and policy dimensions, including national and regionalperspectives.
Meeting the needs of disadvantaged users and non-users.

Papers will be published by Library Association publishing, London, in the LWW Conference Series. Presentations may take the form of full papers or workshop presentations of 40 minutes. To be considered please submit an abstract (between 400 and 800 words) together with a 50 word biographical statement and a 50 word synopsis of the paper. Please send submissions, preferably by email (as text rather than an attachment), to the address below by 2nd March 2001. Applicants will be informed whether their submissions have been selected during April 2001.

Please note that, as the conference does not aim to make a profit, we are unable to offer discounted conference rates to presenters. All enquiries should be addressed to the organisers: http://www.cerlim.ac.uk/conf/lww4/welcome.html

Interlending and Document Supply International Conference Ljubljana
1 - 5 October 2001

Organised jointly by the National and University Library, Ljubljana and the IFLA Office for International Lending The 7th Interlending and Document Supply International Conference continues the tradition started in 1988. Each of the previous conferences have attracted almost 200 delegates from 40 different countries. Co-operation with other players has always been crucial to effective interlibrary loan and document supply. Traditional partners in resource sharing have always been other libraries, and more recently, commercial document suppliers. Increasingly, however, the boundaries between traditional interlibrary loan and commercial electronic access are becoming less defined, and the work of the ILL department brings it into contact with a range of other players: publishers, of course, but also rights organisations, library consortia, and developers of technical systems and services. In other areas, the services offered by the ILL department may overlap with those offered by archives, book distributors or repository libraries. As well as providing an update on emerging ILL trends and challenges and taking a look at current practice, this conference aims to look beyond traditional document suppliers to include services offered by other resource providers. Subsequent meetings were scheduled in association with IFLA Conferences in Barcelona (1993), Copenhagen (1997), and Boston (2001), reflecting the growing interest shown by the LIS profession in CPE. Location: The School of Information and Media, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland. See CPERT pages at: http://www.ifla.org/VII/rt7/rtcpe.htm
